Mac to Winders via VNC
#1
my wifes gateway may or may not be in the last throws. Unfortunately, I'm here, she's in Fla on vaca. So everything is from a non tech viewpoint.

I won't go thru the tech failure part unless someone has interest in that.

IIf her laptop has pooped, could I send her my G4 17" for her to log into her office VNC and how would that work? She's on XP for all her machines.
She just needs it for payroll and payroll taxes.

Reason being, if she needs a new machine and her old has data that needs to be transferred, I'd have her send the laptop here and have someone I know do the transfer, provided the HD is still spinning.

Have her send you the laptop.

This is free, and if you have Office installed it's probably already on your Mac.

If not, go here:

Apple's remote desktop client uses the VNC protocol and is compatible with other VNC software. You can thus use it or a handful of third-party software options (i.e. ChickenOfTheVNC) as a client to the remote VNC server. It doesn't matter that the remote computer is Windows and the client is Macintosh. VNC will work with any combination of operating systems.

Microsoft's remote desktop client uses a different protocol and requires that the Windows server is running the specific Microsoft remote desktop protocol server software. Windows XP Pro has this built-in. Windows XP Home does not.

If she is logging into a windows server she would be way better to use MS remote desktop. The client on the mac is very nice. I regularly use our w2k3 servers from the 12" pb I am posting from. The client is free from MS.
