Didn't you get a name of the person handling the claim? It's been years since I had anything repaired or replaced through Amex, but I seem to remember being given a contact name and number. My claim went very smoothly. The HD went out in my Pismo just after it was out of warranty. I did have to get a repair estimate, but Amex just sent me a check for that amount, and I did the switch myself. The only other claim was for a monitor that I'd gotten for my daughter in law for Christmas. When it went out, they just sent me a check after verifying how much I'd paid for it, just like wurm's experience.

They don't seem to give out that info. I just have a number to call and a claim number.
I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that the product in question is nearly $1k and over three years old.
