Polls in the east that open at 7am -- the news will have the projections ready at 7:01am.

That would be lunch time for you -- so basically, the moment they open, CNN will announce the winner.

If you listen to any exit polls before the polls actually close, you're in for a severe roller coaster ride. All that matters during the day is info on turnout.

Polls here close at 8 PM ET. As for campaigning on election day, no official restriction on that as far as I know. But traditionally, the candidates heve not. Supporters are restricted from doing activities considered "electioneering" within a zone surrounding entrances to polling places in many states. You can often tell to within a foot where that zone ends, there will be supporters of the different candidates holding signs and passing out pamphlets just outside it.
