switcher brother's new Macbook is a little jacked up, maybe?
#1
ok, my brother just got a new macbook for himself and his wife as well. He and I have been communicating over iChat and he's got some weird behavior:

(1) when we try to transfer files over iChat, the transfer either won't start (it times out on his end and he has to log out and back in to get control of iChat again) or, it'll start, then the transfer will give an "ended unexpectedly" error.

(2) internet is very slow and can take forever to open certain pages, if at all

(3) He frequently has to log in and out of iChat to get it to work. We can do video and screen sharing semi-regularly, but, frequently, it times out and he has to log out and then back in again. Gives him a timeout error frequently.

(4) he called apple and they did bunch of stuff, including a new "system preferences folder" (not sure what that means). the apple rep believes its his router. However, the rep wanted to reinstall the OS to be sure.

(5) he has nearly the identical problems at work. However, he does not that, at work, the internet setup is kind of lame and slow

(6) his wife is having 'similar problems' at home...haven't tested it somewhere else yet.

(7) at home, his airport will say it's connected, but also will just sit there and say 'scanning' for a long time...then eventually find the network

ideas? probably his D-link router? Should he wipe and re-install? this whole thing sucks, as this is his first mac...

Really easy to find out if it is the router. As mentioned above, pull the router from the mix.

Pull the power cord from the modem. Then remove router and connect modem directly to Mac. Plug in modem power cord. Wait until lights settle, then power up Mac. Test with iChat.

If problem is gone, the router needs replacing. If problem remains, then the ISP needs to fix the problem, either in the cable/DSL connection or in the modem.

To get a router back in the chain, unplug the modem from power again, insert the router. Then plug in the modem, then router, then launch the Mac. You should wait until the modem is ready before powering up the router, and the same for the router before launching the Mac.

This routine has been posted many times on this and the other forum, but no one seems to find these postings. Not just by me, but a number of others.

every single problem you describe has to do with the internet connection. it might be that and not the machine.

It's not (or, at least, wasn't) his computer. It is his network.

Why is he using a router if he has an Airport? All he needs is the cable or DSL modem into the Airport. That's it.

He needs to start over with the network configuration and--now that his computer has been messed with--maybe nuke 'n' pave there too.
