Word and anti-virus for a PC?
#1
My buddy called and asked about Word and anti-virus for his daughters' PCs running Vista.

Amazon has MS Office Home/Student 2007 for $80 and Norton A-V 2009 for $30.

What do you bi-platform types recommend? MacAfee got some bad reviews.

One commenter suggested:

1. Download and install Super Anti Spyware http://www.superantispyware.com/ (It's free)
2. Install it.
3. Boot into Windows Safe Mode (Press F8 while the computer is booting up)
4. Run Super Anti Spyware (a complete scan, NOT the smart scan).
5. Remove everything it finds.
6. Reboot.
7. Uninstall your old McAfee product
8. Download and install AVG anti virus http://free.avg.com/ (again free)
9. Reboot into Safe Mode.
10. Run the AVG complete scan. Remove anything it finds.

This process will probably fix any virus/malware problem you have. The 10% it won't fix require the expertize of a professional computer technician.

I'm thinking something along those lines. Any other suggestions? (I TOLD him if he loves his family he'd get them Macs, but he fell for the cheap Toshiba price tags.)

AVG is pretty good. That and ALL M$ updates. ClamWinAV is also good, but slow to scan.

Norton Internet Security 2009 is much better protection and especially for the younger generation that tend to get around on the internet. Colleges are virtual cesspools of viruses from the many download favorites like Lime-wire, et al.
