About resetting the SMC...

Apple warns not to do so arbitrarily - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1894 .

Why is that? What would or could it hurt?

I suppose there is a risk that things might go wrong, either human or machine errors, that could potentially cause irreparable damage.

When you reset it, it also resets settings you may not be expecting. For example, volume control, startup disk...

It may cause problems, too, I'm not sure. But I wouldn't be surprised if they got calls like "I reset my SMC but now it boots into my old OS install."

compulsive scab picking can lead to addictive cutting behaviours.

They're probably just being extra careful about mental health issues.
Both the user and the computer's.



(It's possible to corrupt data in nvram and pram unintentionally)
