I bought a 3GS iPhone last week and my wife decided that she wanted to trade my old 2G iPhone for her Sony Ericsson. No sweat...we were going to be near an AT&T store so we took both phones in, hoping to walk out with a working iPhone. No dice. They gave me a new SIM but then said "We can't change the service over because we don't have a copy of iTunes on any store computers". You'll have to do that yourself" WHaaaaaa?!?! I asked why they didn't ave a copy and he told me that it was standard practice...you can't get help with iPhone service issues at B&M AT&T stores. Without the power of monopoly, you can bet companies like this would go out of business fast. So,

I could be wrong here, but I think the issue is with Apple. They don't want uneducated ATT people giving support on their phones.

I was just in an AT & T Store last week to transfer my new wife's two phone lines that were on her brother's corporate account. While I was handling that another person came in with an iPhone that wouldn't boot past the apple logo. They downloaded and installed OS 3.0 for her. NO problem. This was in Daytona Beach and the store was very busy.
My transfer took a while but they were very helpful to me.
But we know that different stores are better than some . . .

No two stores (or kiosks) are created equal.
Nor staffed with equally competant and capable employees.
(applies to Verizon as well)

Three keys to success:
1) Work hard
2) Don't tell people everything you know
