Lost Garage door remote. SOL?
#1
Do I need a whole new mechanism? If not, How do I figure out how to program the one I bought from Home dePot? It's an older one with dipswitches inside the remote (can't find the Genie manual from the original homeowner).

There are probably DIP switches inside the opener in the garage that set the code.

How old is the opener?

You can get just a new remote receiver interface--it connects where the hard wired button does to the opener unit.

You might be able to find the manual online.

You can get a new remote at any number of places including online.

Open up the receiver portion, and as GGD says, there will be DIP switches. Match the settings in your remote and you're gold.

Go to home depot and ask. I needed another one. It wasnt exactly the same. Smaller etc... Got my manual, and followed directions, by holding a button down a certain way or number of times on the MOTOR of the opener, and then the button on new remote, and then it would work with the new remote. Just have to ask which one works with your remote.

I can't believe how expensive they are, $40+. Almost a third of the whole system. I have a Craftsman with a Learn button. They are a cinch to program.

:agree:

My older opener had a panel on the opener that flipped down and you just matched the DIP switch settings inside the opener to the ones inside the remote.

Yes! I found the dipswitches on the ceiling a couple feet away from the mechanism. Thanks all!
