F/U: my problem with Maxtor 1TB ext HD and Retrospect Express 6

http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1...msg-776747

I discoverd that RE wasindeed backing up fine to the Maxtor. The Maxtor's directory just wasn't updating. I unmounted it and when remounted the directory updated to show the updates had taken place.

I am backing up an ext FW WD drive (connected to the MacPro) and the Maxtor was daisy chained to the WD. My previous WD ext backup HD was connected the same way and I think it always updated as the backups were done.

Am I mistaken and missing something about FW or is this a Maxtor thing? Maybe the Maxtor is formatted differently?

Edit: Maxtor was formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

If the file really was updated and the Finder just didn't show you the update, the Finder's your problem. Not the drive. And it's a common problem. 'Happens to me all the time when I'm shuffling files around at the command-line.

The OS X Finder needs to be kicked sometimes in order to display the updated contents of a directory.

If it bugs you, there's a "refresh window" AppleScript floating around to take care of that... or you could log out and in again or relaunch the Finder.

One of the MANY problems with the Finder that I hope gets fixed in SL.

I've found that sometimes all you need to do is select the particular file with the mouse and it will update its information immediately. It may depend on what version of OS X you are working with.

I will give that a try tomorrow, thanks.

I'm hoping that SL fixes this, too.

I don't dig too deep into an OS, but this is one of the constant sources of annoyance for me. Sometimes I'll see a window update-- the window appears static but then a file suddenly pops in where I expect.

Other times I wait and wait and nada. Closing and reopening the window then shows the file. I *really* don't want Apple to add a Refresh command to the menu, I'd just like it to work like I'd expect.
