The automated sort systems that are used by all of the big delivery companies these days can be VERY harsh on packaging.
Any company that ships expensive/fragile items through FedEx has to have the packaging approved in advance of shipping if they want to be able to get paid on insurance claims. In fact, there is a whole department at FedEx that will help your company engineer packaging that will travel safely through the system.
That being said I really hate it when my letter carrier tosses small packages (anything under about 10 pounds seems to be fair game for him) up to the second floor landing...
