I've clipped a AA battery temporarily to where a dead battery was just to make sure that's all it needs.
PCI and ram sockets are easily disturbed in old motherboards.
Doesn't have to be dust or dirt, it can be just the tiniest bit of tarnish on the contacts and not much of a nudge.
Yanking them out and reseating will either work or spread the grunge around requiring a good cleaning or insertion into the next available socket if available.
