The Hasan Hour
#11
No really - he was batshit crazy and everyone seemed to know it more than a year ago.

The FBI passed on it and the military didn't do anything about it ... passed the problem down the line.

Why do you think that Team Bush ignored all the red flags ? Any ideas ?

This is a cry for help. A cry for help from the usual Powerpoint tedium, where every large and small idea is conveyed with bullets and PowerPoint speak. The same goddamned titles that show up in every single context where PowerPoint is used. Slide 2: "Objectives." Slide 4: "Definitions."

Slide 413: "Audience sleeping."

That being said...

That this was presented when the agreed-upon topic was medical is scary, but perhaps only in retrospect. Someone presenting an off-topic topic might be just so concerned about potential problems, that they'll use any chance to get their ideas to an audience.

It seems to be a warning, but about others; not necessarily about himself.

One problem with PowerPoint reminds me of Plato's shadows…we don't know what was intended or conveyed; we only see the bullet points. So there's lots of nuance (and outright meaning) which can't be determined from this crap, standardized format.

Whatever was said by the presenter out loud might have indicated whether he was only speaking about what others might be going through, or that he was also talking about himself. I don't know if that can be determined form what's provided. If there's something I missed that contradicts what I've said, certainly let me know.

Bush was PC too on many fronts. How many times did he take off his shoes and went to mosques to apologize and explain, for what I don't know. Did him some good. I am not a Christian but what is this self-doubt permeating Christianity everywhere?

Can we all--except for the usual suspects, that is--agree that we are exercising hindsight here? While there may have been a chance that someone could have foreseen the tragedy at Fort Hood, it would have been a complete shot in the dark.

I deal with people who seem to be batsh*t crazy all the time and so far no one has shot up the neighborhood.

People in the military services are under incredible pressure right now and some of them appear to be batsh*t crazy, but they don't go out and shoot up the post.

In 99.44 percent of the cases batsh*t crazy behavior is a vent, not a symptom.

I got the 99.44 percent number from the old Ivory Soap commercials. don't hold me to the fraction of percentage.

It would be interesting to take a look at receipts at the bar in officers' and NCO clubs. I bet alcohol consumption has doubled or tripled.

Our expectations of others are very unrealistic. We need to stop watching the tube and resume talking to each other.

If they could foresee this crap and even had a definitive and working policy for dealing with and identifying those on the edge, the suicide count wouldn't be what it is.

They're working on it, but a lot more energy and effort is being expended on H1N1 and cancer research, for (hopefully) obvious reasons.

You don't have to KNOW that someone like him will go on a rampage like this but couldn't someone say this guy with these views just doesn't belong in the army? What does it take to get fired from the military these days? Go get a teaching job and you can use your pp slides in class all your life, and get tenured for it.

One more thing. Keeping arms away from soldiers on base, or have armed guards everywhere, is an unmitigated disaster. He might as well have assaulted a kindergarten.
