best $100 camera
#1
my mom has an older digital thats giving up the ghost so she needs a new one. However, she doesn't have a lot of money to spend. So she asked me to find her the best camera possible for $100. Any suggestions?

I don't know if this is the best or not, but it looks like a good price for this camera that is selling for more elsewhere.

I wish I could find some reviews on that Fuji. My wife also wants an inexpensive camera.

Someone else asked about Fuji a few days ago- here is my response:

I've had two Fuji Finepix (two different models) and each one developed the same problem- they simply stop recognizing charged or fresh batteries so I keep getting the low battery signal no matter what I do.

The first one developed the problem while the camera was still in warranty so I had it fixed and forgot about it. The 2nd model I bought was fine for a year or so and then started having trouble.

Since the camera is out of warranty and didn't cost that much to begin with, I've been dealing with it until I can get a new one. I can take 3, maybe 4 pictures before it shuts down due to "low battery" problems.

Overall the images themselves are pretty good and it is a nice size, but I won't be buying another Fuji.

What are her needs?
Some things to consider are the optical zoom range and useful flash range.

IIRC (because my sister wanted to get something with more zoom and still be compact), Kodak has some offerings with decent flash & zoom range for right around a C-note.

Edit:
I think this is what my sister ended up getting:
Kodak Z885 (Beach Camera has it for $115)
5x optical zoom, 32 MB internal memory, uses SD/SDHC Cards, up to 19' flash range, uses (2) AA batteries for power

do needs really factor into a sub $100 camera? I don't think she needs a super small camera that'll fit into her wallet. OTOH its not like she can afford a DSLR either.

Re: the Kodak. I'm not a big fan of using regular batteries.

Seems like perhaps this would make a great Christmas gift - something she needs and actually wants!

This nikon is the size of a deck of cards and the lens does not protrude outward to zoom for $89. The refurbs are as good as new from Adorama. I have an earlier version and it is great for slipping into my shirt pocket.

This Canon might be easier to grip and the buttons are larger for senior eyes

That's easy the Nikon L20 with a 3" LCD screen.

I've got a red L18 for a pocket camera and still amazed at the pics that come out of it.
I dropped yesterday from 4 ft onto concrete and I just knew it was toast, landed right on corner
of the housing, but it was fine. If ours went out I'd buy another in a heartbeat, we take it
everywhere. The Canon SX10 is nice but too big to carry everywhere.
