Holy Mackerel! A wireless connection in Cummington!

Yoicks! i got out the ibook, which I hadn't used in a while because I wanted to try out Sync and get it coordinated with my mini. And it asked me if I wanted to connect to a new network (airport was on from the last time I used it in Northampton). So I am actually on line wirelessly here in the hills without benefit of a base station, and judging by the speed with which this opened the frappr page, I have a good connection indeed.

I suspect that I am connected to the community house down the street. I'd heard that the seloectmen had gotten some kind of high speed connection there but hadn't had time to investigate before.

I just checked with a selectman, and they do indeed have a T1 line going into the Community House, with an antenna-in the attic! They are much surprised that I, about 3/10 mile away around a corner with trees and a hillside between me and there, am getting the connection.

This is all the doing of, are you ready for this-Homeland Security which mandated that all Boards of Health(!) be connected with high-speed. And they are paying for it until October.
The signal fades out sometimes, maybe because of those turkey buzzards circling around, but is reliable enough for a freebie.

it sin't fictional, but i won't answer for what goes on behind closed doors in this little town.
