If you've already got RipIt, keep using it. Handbrake via VLC will only be successful some of the time

Having transcoded over 100 DVDs using Handbrake, I've had to resort to third-party rippers only 3 times (Casino Royale, The Golden Compass, Terminator Salvation).

Nevertheless, I agree that RipIt is a fine utility.

Handbrake is about as easy as it gets. You start the program, select your dvd, hit the ipod preset, add to queue, start. When it is complete you drag the resulting file to itunes.

Exactly what I was going to post.

Not sure why you need VLC, AFAIK, I dont have it installed and HB works great.

The newest version of HB does not contain ripping code. Instead, it relies on the same built-in to VLC. It uses that code 'silently,' i.e. VLC does not need to be running but merely installed in order for Handbrake to perform a rip.

...is that all it does is rip the movie.

That's all well and good but Handbrake doesn't see a RipIt file.

RipIt is easy to use, but I don't always want the extras, and I *do* want to be able to put a movie on my 'Phone.

I'll have to play with HB some more, but it finding the title often seems more like luck than skill.

Does Handbrake see files decrypted with Fairmount? Is there any advantage to using Fairmount first?

The current version of Handbrake that came out not long ago can see a Ripit rip, and is overall much better about being able to accept most any file as its source.

Ripit makes a DVD Player-compatible ".dvdmedia" file, which is a package file that contains the normal VIDEO_TS folder. So if there was any issue with HB you could just dig into it yourself. There's more, here: http://thelittleappfactory.com/ripit/help/

I've got the latest version of RipIt and HB, but HB doesn't see the RI file.

But I pulled out the TS folder and HB is grinding away.

Thanks for the info, deckada.
