Do I continue with the toys-r-us one gear kid bikes or is this a good age to move towards something with gears?

definitely time to upgrade to a gear bike. Go with what works for your area (and her preferences) and how she's going to be riding. She's old enough to understand the difference between riding to her friend's house on the street, and a mechanized form of transportation.

And puhleeze.. teach her gears. Most kids just do NOT know how to use 'em. Of course, I tried and mine just do not listen to me. :oldfogey:
