Can Disk Utility copy a CDG (CD+G) disk? Or Toast?
#1
A DJ friend wants to make backup copies of his Karaoke disks. I guess ripping them to a HD might be OK too, so long as they can be burned to disk if need be. I'll see him tonight. He's got a MBP of some kind I think.

If he's got a laptop I'm not sure why he even wants to bother with discs-- there's a pretty decent app called K-Jams that will play them.

But yes, Disk Utility will make an exact copy of anything-- the instructions vary a bit by OS version.

OK, we'll give it a whirl. Don't know about his setup but I know he doesn't know about K-Jams. Pretty sure he uses a dedicated professional Karaoke CD player.

Here's what I learned:
No dice. Disk Utility reports that it can't image "a non-data CD." Also learned that nothing from Roxio can do it either.

Toast will recognize the songs via Gracenote, and burn a "copy," and Disk Utility can burn a disc image made from a folder copy, but all of these methods ignore the extra graphic info and just make an audio CD-if that much. Googling hasn't so far indicated otherwise ...

Sorry if I led you astray . . .
What do you mean by "extra graphic info"?

CD-G reads two files and associates them by having the same name, e.g. Track 9.cdg and Track 9.mp3.

I have never tried it so I'm not 100% sure but I think you could just fill a data CD with these files and the Karoake player would select the .cdg file and automatically find the associated audio file.

Been wanting to understand this better so if anyone knows a bit please chime in.
