Update 2, my car
#1
I removed the starter this afternoon to check the gear. No bloodshed! All the teeth are present and look good. The ring gear on the engine also appears to have all it's teeth (I was able to turn the crankshaft from the front while craning my neck in such a way as to see into the bellhousing through where the starter was). Next step is to try and fish out any loose bits from inside with a magnet. No pics, but my hands look very goth right now.

:-)

Only time I've had ring gear teeth missing the starter would only locate on the dead spot in a busy very flat parking lot on a rainy day or when I was late for an appointment.

Hope you find the source of the hum.
