Have to swap out Comcast modem (rental) - which one to ask for?
#1
our cable internet has been anything but reliable lately and after several excrutiating hours with the less than helpful Comcast agents, I've been instructed to swap out the modem at the local service office.

Anyone know if there's a Comcast supplied modem that's noticeably better than the others? The one I have is a Scientific Atlanta (not sure the model).

don't know if they will, but doesn't hurt to ask, so I thought I'd see if anyone had a recommendation.

We've had good luck through the years with the Motorola Surfboard. In fact, I don't know if you've considered it (or what your rental fee is), but you might think about just buying one. I think I bought ours at Walmart for $60 just about a year ago. But here it is for $50 at Amazon.

Some of us on Comcast have been quite happy with the DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola Surfboard 6120. We've had to purchase these on our own - in order to save the monthly modem rental. Comcast in Portland, OR wants $6.87 a month for a rental. Not sure you will get faster speeds than the SB5101. But DOCSIS 3.0 may "futureproof" your modem. http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SB6120-SU...lectronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1303705146&sr=1-1 LyleH

we've only been on cable since the beginning of the year (just moved) and have a 1 year price of $80/month for internet and cable TV. Not sure if we're going to stay after the year is up (I mean with cable, we will definitely be staying in the new house), so I don't want to buy a modem just yet.

Besides, there's no guarantee swapping out the modem will fix my problem.

I will try to get a motorola modem this time.

I've used the Motorola Surfboard units for 10 + years now with Comcast cable, and am quite happy. When DOCSIS 3 is available in my area, I'm likely to replace my purchased 5120 with a 6120.

Out of the 3 Surfboards I've had, one died. I upgraded to this 5120 to get better performance, and gave the 4100 to a relative because it matched his needs with his WOW provider (not the game). It's 10 years old and still working.

Well, I went to the local office and swapped for a Motorola SB5101.

Hope it works better than the Scientific Atlanta one.

The SB5101 should work better than the S.A. modem.

But remember this is Comcast's problem so if you still have problems it's up to them to make it right.

Yes, it's comcast's problem, but I'm sure if I let them roll a truck, they would find a way to charge me.
