Inherited a G5 at work, but...

Could have the same RAM, but if they are not all the same could have been switched around and are no longer matched. That is a common error made by persons not familiar with the layout of the G5 memory slots. But, I would remove all RAM and verify that you have the correct DIMM's as in an university environment RAM scavenging and swapping happens frequently when machines are out of service. Not always known about by the possessor of the box.

JoeH, true, but I got the impression that this particular machine had been in working condition right before I got it (turned in by another faculty member). However, reading through Jack D's links, the soldering problem seems likely...

(in case anyone is still reading)

The hair dryer trick worked !!! It's back up and running again. Boy, what a bizarre defect for an Apple machine to have.
