In addition to using Adrive, Dropbox, Gmail, DVDs and/or other imacs as backup for key files, I keep weekly/biweekly bootable clone of my main mac on a portable USB drive via CCC.
I want to be able to be up and running with most my applications and settings within 2 minutes when my harddrive fails. I may not have hours or days to 1) diagnose the problem, 2) possibly get a new drive, and 3) format and install new OS and applications and/or recover from backup. A somewhat recent bootable clone allows me to get productive within almost all my files and very little headache.
If you have to keep perfect clones of several versions of your files very accessible, I'm sure TM is great. If you need to be able to get working quickly if your hard drive dies, having a bootable clone via CCC is great.
