a friend mentioned she has Amazon Prime, and she can watch online (streaming, ok I know that) and that she also gets DVDs in the mail from Amazon, like Netflix. I never heard of Amazon sending out rental DVDs by mail, so this has me confused. Maybe she mixed up Amazon and Netflix. I looked at Amazon's web site and I do not see any option rent physical DVDs, only to "rent" online streaming

I looked online and it seems they did that a few years ago when they tried to compete with Netflix... but not now

Weird, even if Amazon did rent DVDs in the USA a few years ago, there was no overlap with the Amazon Prime Instant Video service that was rolled out in February of 2011.
Amazon has streaming movies for rent or purchase. I'm actually thinking of dropping Netflix for Amazon Prime video plus the occasional rented movie (keep an eye out for deals). Love Netflix, but since I pay for Prime anyway, I'd like my dollars to stretch further.
