Old 2.5" ide ext has problems
#1
anything bigger than about 100MB and it crawls and sometimes stops with error -36, or -50.
Is it time to kiss this sucker goodbye?
I just formatted it from a Leopard install DVD, and that went fine. But it wouldn't format from my SL system.
2.5" Tosh MK8025GAS 4200rpm from a pbook G4 in an OWC buss powered enclosure about 1 year old.

Is this behavior a change from past trouble-free functioning?
Are you connecting via USB or Firewire?

I haven't used it in a year probably. It's been on our shelf.
The only option is FW. Tried a couple different ports and cables.

Formatted Mac Ext Journaled.

Hmmmm . . . sitting in storage is typically not when a hard drive goes bad, but who knows . . .
It checks out fine in disk utility?
It does sound like it's on its last legs.
Bet you could grab a replacement of about the same size for shipping next free stuff Monday.

yup, DU is able to repair disc when copies fail.

update.

Re-reseated cables, and so far, going alright again. Transferred a G a moment ago.
Now concatenating split files on it. This would be nice.
Needed it for biz trip I'm taking Tues, with little time to mess about, so hoping for the best.

Stiction? Granted, this problem should be much less frequent with modern drives.

I know you feel strongly about this, but there's really no need for profanity.
