I didn't have a huge LP collection (maybe 50 or 60), but I did end up buying most of them on CD over time. I still have a handful of LPs, but haven't listened to them in over 15 years. I now have about 500 CDs. I will not replace them if some "new" format comes out. My ears are to the point where I can't really tell much difference between the CD and a decent MP3. Yeah, I have an iPod, and I've ripped a bunch of CDs to MP3, but that's just for convenience. I don't plan on getting rid of any of the CDs.
As for movies, I won't be rushing to upgrade any existing DVDs to whichever HD format wins. I'm in the process of converting a bunch of VHS to DVD, but only because over time the quality of the VHS deteriorates.

I've reached the stage in my life where I resist buying more plastic boxes of plastic discs just because I want the bits they contain. :-)

i do want to convert some of my VHS tapes to DVD (the ones i can't rent) so i can lessen the amount of storage space required for said videos. 200 DVDs takes up much less space than 200 VHS tapes!

I have over 800 vinyls in storage. Transferring to CD seems too daunting a task.
Minty, daunting is putting it mildly. It would be tedious, painful and time-consuming beyond belief. Long before you were done you would be begging for someone to just take you out back and shoot you.
I was all keen to transfer some cassettes of concerts I had taped (FM broadcasts) and got through one or two before I put the whole project on the back burner.

The nice thing about digital is that it doesn't degrade.
Assuming that I have a good backup strategy, I don't need to replace or update with the latest and greatest format.
But I'm still moving content from analog to digital and will probably be doing so well into 2007.
Until I've got my complete multimedia collection digitized and am playing it off of a video-jukebox piped into my computer or my tv/entertainment center any which way I want, I'm not ready to embrace a new medium.
So the HD/Blu-ray thing is important to me only as an abstract philosophical matter and as something to watch out for in the nest of technologies that I should consider when I buy my next tv.

The bad thing is that it is sort of degraded to start with, if we are talking about MP3s or stuff from iTMS.
Most of what I have is classical and will remain on CD. Aside from wanting better sound quality, I have yet to rip a single classical CD into iTunes (in AIFF format) for which I didn't have to laboriously enter most or all of the track information or edit the info for spelling or other errors. That gets old incredibly fast.
