anyone make ssd boot drive in mac pro? if so, how?
#11
I installed a bluray drive in my second optical bay. The only difficult part was running the SATA cabling from the extra ports on the mobo to the optical compartment. Mine is the 1,1 MacPro though. I don't know if any of the newer MacPros have SATA going to the optical bays already. You could just lay an SSD in there and it wouldn't harm anything as long as you don't move the machine around much. Or you can get an adapter to make it fit into the optical "holder".

how do other mac pro folks use the 2nd optical drive space?

I've got a 2nd optical drive in my 2nd optical drive space. Came installed in there when I bought it. Hardly use it, however.

And, I just bought a 120GB 3G SSD drive today from OWC for my MacPro 1,1. Can't wait to get that sucker installed.

jeff-

i might have misread your response.

are you installing the ssd drive in the 2nd optical bay of your mac pro?

be well.

I've got an SSD as my boot drive in my Mac Pro 5,1 in the 2nd optical bay. Was super-simple to do...SATA cabling is already there for the 2nd optical, so I just used an adapter so it would fit correctly in the space. It's just like any other drive would work. PM me if you have any questions.

Nope, it will eventually go into the first drive bay, with the OWC AdaptaDrive bracket.
