Why are there going to be three "Hobbit" movies?

Especially if, compressed to one movie, it sucks so bad no one goes to see it...

Neither LOTR nor The Hobbit COULD be made into a single movie and not suck.

It's like watching the edited version of the Miniseries Shogun.... 10 hours distilled into a 2 hour movie. Totally nonsensical, and a total waste of time.
