In 1964, Lesley Gore belted out “You Don’t Own Me” and a feminist song was born.

It’s still resonating in the 21st century as debate over women’s issues bubbles in the United States before Nov. 6.

On Monday, a video hit YouTube with Gore introducing her song saying, “I’m Lesley Gore and I approve this message.”

The video features many women, girls and a few indie stars of all ages lip-syncing the song, and, at times, holding signs about their reproductive freedom. “My body is not a battleground,” read one. Another said, “Get Your Rosaries Off My Ovaries.”

Where can I find a two dollar haircut?

I'm of the age where I can remember when this song first came out, and I'm particularly pleased that Lesley Gore not only allowed the use, but participates in it.

I also find it interesting that the current generation has had the freedom and advantages that came about from what was, at the time, called the "sexual revolution," the result of the introduction of the birth control pill, and most of them probably are not even aware that it was a major change in our entire culture, more or less coincident with the beginnings of the Viet Nam conflict, the Beatles, the acceleration of drug usage, and the civil rights movement. Some folks appear to resent all of this, hence the neocons and what's left of the Republican Party.

I predict that in another generation, a lot of these reactionary movements will be all but forgotten. There will still be religious zealots and maybe even a few racists, but common experience will have put most of their thought through the wringer and squeezed out most of the emotional juice.

Ca Bob, I wish your sentiments would happen, but with 50% of people voting conservative, knowing full well the history, this implies that the reactionary movements will not die out, but are seemingly becoming stronger. If Romney wins, and if the Senate also goes Republican, I'd say there is a strong chance that Roe vs Wade will be overturned, and Mississippi's experiment with killing off women's health facilities will gain traction in other states and what the "sexual revolution" made happen will get reversed. The United States has been heading socially rightward ever since the 60's and 70's ended. Remember that the next President will most likely replace 2, if not 4 Supreme Court judges.

Like Ca Bob I also remember Leslie emanating from my AM car radio, then she was a two or three hit wonder. It's nice to see her lend her work to something so important to women. Not to mention the production value was masterful.

I like this:

The video, labeled as “YouDon’tOwnMePSA,” is the mastermind of Sarah Sophie Flicker, a law school graduate, filmmaker, trapeze artist, mother and leader of New York’s The Citizens Band, a cabaret collective that makes political statements.
