They've made a conscious decision to abandon local news coverage and try to catch the worldwide internet bubble. Last week they put the Boston Globe back on the market, last time was for union concessions, this time is final.

The Globe's always been a great regional newspaper, hopefully they'll find a buyer to continue that tradition.

NYT has recently adjusted goals and now looks at itself as the multinational "Newspaper of Record". Seems one of the others in that competition is now HuffPro.

This whole metamorphosis is fascinating to watch. Gutty will undoubtedly have something more insightful to offer.

Pity. I always loved the Trib when I was traveling.

Color me confused. Why is this in the political side? The thread is quite non-political, as far as I can tell.

I assumed that somebody would have something right-wing-snarky to say about the NYT so figured I'd save time and put it here.

The money is running out for newspapers.

The NY Times is an exceptionally expensive operation since collecting real news from real sources is not as cheap as tabloid 'crime and murder' and 'just making it up'.

Actually getting 'news' from the sources is cheaper and easier. The challenge lies in fact checking and quality reportage. The use of the internet to make everybody a 'reporter' has produced a vast wave of complete crap.. stupidity, misunderstanding, and outright lies.
