I would suggest you look at http://edovia.com/en/screens.html for remote access. It is much more reliable than Apple's client. They keep track of the computer you want to access so you don't have to know what the ip address is. You access it using a PIN that you enter one time on your client app. BTW, they have an excellent client for both OSX and for IOS. I've been extremely happy with their software and highly recommend it.

I would try using ichat/messages, but install and configure the teamviewer as an alternative. I mostly use teamviewer.
