Good luck to her offspring. Sounds like an uphill battle.
Is it a good idea?

yeah, I was just thinking that if $15 a month would break the bank then there are some other more serious issues going on.
Maybe you could just get a wireless router and leech off of someone else's connection for free.

stevejob,
a divorce will do that to anyone ... she used to have an upper middle class lifestyle not too long ago. She is a very hard-working and determine-minded woman, and her high school teen daughter is well-behaved and a good student. They will make it. ==== mikebw, "yeah, I was just thinking that if $15 a month would break the bank ..." The reason why we'd like to split the cost. We don't need a wireless router to leach. Our neighborhood is full of OPEN UNSECURED wi-fi connections! We are already piggy-backing our friends' DSL 1/4 mile away from us :-) Kap

It's not legal, is it?
If you use Speakeasy.net, they offer a be-your own ISP via WiFi...then it'd be legal to share your bandwith. GL

Sharing bandwidth is illegal? Uh-oh, I thought having permission from our friends would make it alright. We even offered to pay half the cost of service but they declined. So does it mean that it is also illegal for me to hook up wirelessly to the wi-fi networks of friends or family during my visits to them?
I'll check out speakeasy.net. Thanks! Kap, have you tried hooking your neighbor up with a Cantanna so that you could get better reception from their WiFi?
![]() Yes it is illegal, but some people in apartments do it all the time. There was a case about a guy who would park outside somebodys house and used their Wi Fi network for free, but he was arrested and charged. Apparently the homeowner didnt approve of a wierdo parked outside his house in a car using a laptop for hours. ![]() Kap, there are so many unsecure wireless networks all over the place. Some people dont know how or dont bother to secure their wireless newtork. Verizon DSL is pretty good about providing Tech support for the DSL line. So you wouldnt have to be the tech support for your tenent. Carm |
