purchasing Mac OS 10.7 Lion - Do I have to use the same AppleID to purchase as I would to install it?
#1
Machine is currently on 10.5.8, user wants to upgrade to 10.7.

Can I purchase this: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion using my Apple account, get the download code that they send via email, and then use the user's apple ID to install 10.7? In other words, is the download code somehow tied to my Apple Account and my account only, or is it just a generic download code that gets assigned to an Apple ID once I signin to the App store on the user's machine to download and install 10.7?

I can get the user to purchase it, but would be much easier to just take care of the purchase on my end and download/install on my own. I do have access to their Apple ID info.

what say ye?

or maybe a better way to put it:

Can I buy 10.7 from apple in the link above, and then 'gift' the download code to somebody else?

I think so. I highly doubt the download is tied to the apple ID

Clay,

I've done the download of 10.7 and the copied the installer to a USB drive and brought to my other machine for actual installation. One of the reasons was to have a backup of the installer and the other is because the Internet access for the other machine. Downloading the installer would take forever. I did the installation on the other machine without using an AppleID. That was easy and went without a hitch. But, had to enter that info for icloud and such.

ok, cool. thanks, guys. sounds like I should have no problem doing it the easy way (use my acct for purchase, but other user's account for entering code and downloading)

Clay,

I don't know about using someone else's code but after I didn't need any codes at all to install it on the other machine. Just copied the installer into the applications folder and performed the installation. 'course, the App store account that was active on the machine was the same one that was on the other machine - my account - but I don't think it had any bearing on the success or failure of the installation. Might I suggest cloning the boot drive to another hard disk via Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper as a safety precaution prior to the installation?
