Fernet Branca
#1
Okay, I found a bottle of this under the sink, way in the back.

It looks like I tried it once. This bottle must have been living there for years. Even the ink on the price tag has completely faded away.

I do enjoy Camapari, but this stuff must have been pretty rough.

Does anyone like this stuff? Maybe I could put it up on Free Item Monday? Just kidding. Are there any good cocktails that can be made with this, or should I use it to scrub the toilet bowl.

See the little 3 cl bottle?
That's one dose.

A three-pack was given to me as a gag gift once, when I was a much worse cook.
I still have two of the three bottles.

Unlike Angostura Bitters, where just a lacing brings out the very best in a good Vanilla Ice Cream, the only purpose of Fernet Branca is to Punish. It leaves an aftertaste for days, an aftertaste that reminds you that it is time yet again to have your Gall Bladder checked out for excessive leakage.

Certain People have been trying to put it in cocktails for decades, for reasons that fail me. But those same people have been trying to do much the same with Methyl Alcohol. Maybe it's the customer turnover.

would spice up poached pears if you don't want it in a coke or a red bull bomb instead of jagermeister.

Fernet Branca is a hangover cure.

Feeling green around the gills from overindulging? This medicinal shot from Italy – and its variations – will sort you out.

I emerged for breakfast distinctly green around the gills. Fergus pulled a bottle of brown, bitter liqueur from his pocket and poured me a shot. Fergus tends to use words sparingly because of his Parkinson's disease, but he is one of the clearest communicators I have ever met. "Try it!" he urged, and with one hand traced the imminent internal journey of the drink – warming the throat, soothing the belly, bouncing back up and splashing over the liver. And then a shake of the whole body and a large satisfied smile. I downed the shot, and that is exactly what happened.

A few Fernet-based cocktails ...

EDIT - Interesting article on Hangover Research.

Digestif, supposed to aid digestion. I've had a few Italian restaurants serve it after meals.

It's true that a shot of Fernet Branca will discourage you from drinking ever again. I guess that would make it an effective hangover cure.
