best GPS package for Palm? (Sony Clie or Palm)
#1
I have a Sony Clie UX50 and a TapWave Zodiac, and would like to turn one of them into a GPS unit. Can someone recommend a good hardware/software solution for the Clie (with Memory Stick and Bluetooth) or the Tapwave (Bluetooth, SD and SDIO slots)?

Thanks,
Enrico

I don't know the answer, since I don't use either devices, or a palm/gps combination. But, I am wondering what you are trying to do, and you get more info if you ask/provide more specific detail: why not consider a dedicated GPS device? Is this for road navigation (live directions or not?), backcountry hiking navigation, marine use? Do you want on board mapping, and if so, how were you thinking about getting those maps, and how much detail do they need and how much do you want to spend?

The groundspeak forums are likely to have much more info, including specific info on those devices:

I used an older GPS unit with my Palm (Serial device, worked with my Palm IIIxe). I personally did not like it, and stopped using it. It was just too clunky. Now the blutooth units sound cool, but Palm's doesn't work with the Palm TX, which is the only unit that I've got techno-lust for at the moment.

Dedicated GPS units sound like a better idea, but I understand your desire for one gizmo in your pocket instead of 2 or 3.

I've tried Verizon's GPS program on my RAZR and liked it, but:
- They charge you $15 a month to use the damn thing
- it only works where you have EVDO coverage- not a lot of good when you're in the boonies.

The big question is- what do you want to use it for ?
- Driving directions ?
- off road activities ?
- Maritime ?
- geocaching ?

I would propose that the PDA based devices are really only intended for driving direction usage.

i'd like to use the GPS for driving directions, primarily. but it woudl be great to use for hiking trails, assuming I could figure out how to goose the battery life. that in itself is a big hurdle I think.
