For the last 2 years, whenever I see my sister's 2009 while Unibody MacBook every few months I have to remove the back and adjust the trackpad because it's jammed up.
I never know if I should tighten the screw more tightly or less loosely but the fix never seems to last. What the hell?

"Less loosely" is "more tightly."
How does a trackpad get "jammed up?"

Maybe try some lock-tite (blue) on the adjustment screw?
Or, it could be that the battery is swelling?

I bought a Radio Shack closeout Magic Mouse to pair up with the desktop iMac. I just couldn't get use to it so I ended up using the old familiar, comfortable, $15 Logitech wireless optical mouse.

Use Locktite on the screw after you get it set right. Oh, and tell her to stop hitting it so damn hard. That is what we found in the school I worked with that had those. The kids that mashed on the trackpad to click had issues with it coming lose. Those that gave it a light tap almost never had a problem.
