Airport express airplay with non apple router?
#1
right now I have an old airport extreme (flat looking one) as my main router and then a newer airport express (white apple tv looking one) connected wirelessly to use for airplaying audio. In an attempt to improve wifi coverage, I want to upgrade the main router. If i go with a non-apple router (TP-Link Archer C8 AC1750) will i still be able to use airplay on the airport express? I have read some people saying that airplay will only work if the express to router connection is wired not wireless as would be in my setup.

It will work fine. Until 2 days ago*, I just had the POC "gateway" from my ISP and had two Apple TVs and an Airport Express. I could AirPlay to any (or all of them simultaneously!) just fine.

* Just got a new 3 TB Airport Time Capsule—love it!

Yes, it works.

The difference is that in connecting to a non-apple router the Express cannot also serve to extend the network. It just connects to the main router as a client device. Your laptop, phone, etc will all connect to your main router and AirPlay data will be sent to the Express.
