Anyone Recommend A Word Press Host?
#1
I'm going to do a few WP sites for friends and am looking for a good hosting company built for WP. Any suggestions on one of the $5-9 a month plans?

you'd be hard pressed to find a host that CAN'T host a wordpress site.

I used to like Hostgator.com, but they got sold and by all accounts, their reliability and CS has gone by the wayside. Bluehost.com was sold to the same company, and I've heard similar reports about them. Asmallorange.com is one that folks here like a lot, but I don't have any experience with them. Dreamhost.com is one that's been around for a long time as well, I know there are folks here that like/use them as well.

There are premium wordpress hosting services out there as well...way more than $5-$9/month, though. But I've had pretty good experience with several: https://wpengine.com and https://www.dreamhost.com/hosting/wordpress/ That's a pretty popular type of service right now, but for most smallish sites, there's very little reason to spend the extra $20 or so a month premium vs standard shared hosting, IMHO.

I personally like and use http://www.a2hosting.com . I'm no longer using their shared hosting...I now act as a reseller for a bunch of small sites (primarily family and friends or clients with smallish sites). But I've been very happy with them...they have knowledgeable and responsive support, competitive pricing and specs, and seem like an all-around good company. You can't go wrong with their shared hosting. Most of the hosting that I resell goes in the $35-$50/year range, and I'd be happy to give you that info if interested.

Thanks. Just tried to score a "deal" at a2. On the sale page it was 5 a month. When I sent to check out--it was up to $95 a month.

This is why I dislike host shopping.

be sure that you enter the coupon code once you add the package to your cart. And realize that the deals are for a certain length of contract...you will get a better price for multi-year plans. Month-to-month will be higher. The $5/month special won't be $95/month...maybe $95/year before coupon code?

Dreamhost has gotten pretty good again. They're on SSDs now too. As far as managed wordpress goes, I'd avoid wpengine. I know the people who built GoDaddy's managed WP, and they're pretty decent. The main WP guru at Dreamhost is knowledgeable as well. MediaTemple = GoDaddy + middle man. But really you just need a standard LAMP host.
