I have iPhone 5 with iOS 9.1 (latest, right?) and iTunes 12.1.2 (not the latest 12.2.2). iPhone worked fine with iTunes 12.1.2, it just let me do a Sync, a backup, a restore.
After restore I get this message:
The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 12.2.2 or later. Would you like to download the latest version of iTunes now?
Damn it, it just worked 20 minutes ago, why it does not work now?
I guess I have to update iTunes, there is no choice.
I so hate Apple software these days.

I likewise have stopped using my iPhone effectively as a companion device to a computer due to the annoyances of trying to sync the device... What's truly pathetic and unacceptable is that OS X customers with iPhones are effectively second-class citizens to Windows customers when syncing, tethering, and especially copying pictures off the phone. Windows can simply browse the pictures folders as if they were a filesystem... OS X has to use Image Capture or some other app JUST TO VIEW pictures on the phone!
And Windows devices have a longer support lifespan by Apple... XP support only ended something like 2 years ago, but 10.4 & 10.5 support have been gone for almost as long as those platforms have been obsoleted.
Supporting your competitor's OS over your own? It's like admitting that your rapid advance OS strategy is failing.

I'm looking at alternative music players and sync software. I am pleased with iMazing for syncing my iDevices, so far. But I can also still sync with iTunes 11.4. For mysic, checking out Tuneshell on my iPhone and Swinsian on my Mac.
