One benefit of this directionality is reduced light pollution. Well maybe in terms of trespassing but if you've flown at night you've seen that light reflects off just about everything it is aimed at.

Indeed every surface has a degree of reflectance, although I daresay the luminous intensity of the reflection is always less than the intensity of the source when viewed directly from a common point of reference.
