SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
#1
I'm currently in a class in Portland studying SuSE Linux Administration. Part of the course materials included the latest versions of SuSE Linux. I just installed SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 on my laptop and I'm blown away. The Broadcom wireless card still doesn't work in Linux, but the Netgear PCMCIA card that I installed worked automatically when I inserted it. I'm not too upset about the Broadcom card. They are notorious for not working well with Linux. Further the OS spouted off the names of the available wireless networks in range, and connected me to the strongest open network with 1 single click. Updates are no brainers. I'm very impressed to say the least. They have officially left Windows in the dust and are closing in on OS X. What I find really interesting is that this is easier to install and easier to use than Vista. If I were a net-admin contemplating what to do about Vista I'd take a very close look at SuSE 10. It would be less of a shock to users switching from XP to SuSE 10 than from XP to Vista. It would require a similar amount of training, and it would cost much less to implement.

I said something similar about moving from OS9 to OS X. That was such a radical change, it opened the doors to Mac people to investigate XP.

I've been running SuSE 10 Personal for over 6 months and really like it. The Gnome desktop is just easy to use.

Having XP forced on me @ work makes me appreciate OS X and SuSE even more! Seriously, Windows is such a steaming pile of shite.

I tried to use SuSE 9.3 a while ago, but it didn't work out. I had too much trouble with getting everything to work and stay working. Stuff seemed to just start and stop working randomly. When I switched to Ubuntu almost everything just worked, but there were still some rough edges. It almost reminded me of OS X. SuSE 10 (aka SLED 10) seems to be even more OS X like and works even smoother than Ubuntu. If only it had the community support like Ubuntu...

thanks, might try the free version on a trash-picked PC.
