iTunes home sharing: how reliable is it?
#1
I haven't used it much, but I am too lazy to upload some files to my phone, so I tried it.

At first it seemed to work fine for the 2-3x that I tried it in the past few weeks.

Now I am sitting here at this mini, iTunes is open and home sharing is ON. I start and album, it plays 2 songs, then it stops.

I go back, select the 3rd song, it seems like it starts to play but no sound on the headphones. I go back and click again, now it just works.

I know, I could plug the headphones in the mini, but I would like to walk around the house and I would like to continue listening, thus I want to play thought the iPhone.

Was this a weird glitch and Home sharing works fine, or is home sharing another Half Baked Apple Pie?

Space,

Weird glitch. Of all the sharing methods (dlna, plex, iTunes Home Sharing, etc), I've found iTunes home sharing pretty reliable. Plex is right up there with it and is the more flexible system. I switched to it because of the flexibility.

The glitches continued.

I selected another album, sometimes it stopped playing, sometimes it showed many songs scrolling fast one after another and nothing was playing. When I went a few steps back, I saw that my home shared library showed up twice, and then one disappeared and only one was left. It was very strange.

This is iTunes 12 on mavericks and iPhone SE with iOS 10.something

Silly as it sounds, I would check your computer 's sleeping settings.
Good luck!

good idea, but I was in fact working on the mini at the time of the first glitch, then wife was working on that mini (logged under her account, but I was also logged in) during the other glitches.

Still, I can increase the time until it sleeps to see if it helps.

My home theater server is a 10.6 machine running home sharing. Pretty stable for almost a decade.

Not running the latest iTunes, however!

I agree with sekker. I have been using home sharing for quite a while as well.

I share my music and movies from my iMac to my AppleTV, a Mac mini, and my ipad with the only problem sometimes being the length of time it takes my ipad to load my large music library. The Apple TV and Mini load the remote library seemlessly

I will be the one to say homesharing has not been very reliable for me. It will play for a while and then it just stops. Load times are very very long. Plex is definitely my favorite for video playback but it has difficulty with music and smart playlist sometimes. I still sync manually for music.

Thanks. I just tried it again this evening and got similar glitches.
