Politics aside, who was the Gold Standard for White House Chief of Staff?

Here's a list. I always thought James Baker was great.

If 45 could read, you could blame it on Tom Clancy. Several sneaky take downs there.

H.R. Haldeman.

He created a system of filtering access to the president that provided the most succinct necessary information for any given moment. This is the system still used up until January 21st. Reince is the departure from that system for non-political reasons.

"Bob" served at the pleasure of a difficult man during historically difficult times.

Then, he took that proverbial bullet and went to prison.

THEN, because of his religious beliefs refused treatment designed to battle his cancer and died a disciplined death.

Now that's a man

Howard Baker. Got Pres. Reagan's administration through Iran-Contra and Reaganheimers.

(My wife has a favorite, Denis McDonough, who was a student of hers.)

The current one, Vladimir Putin, seems pretty accomplished.

Haldeman created the role as we know it. Before his time, the chief of staff was more of a personal assistant.
