I've found the Yosemite Disk Utility quite useful in El Cap and beyond. (Yeah, did the hex editor trick.)

details please?

So here is the question: why does Apple spend time and resources to remove features from the software, if the old version of the software works just fine in the new OS? Who takes these decisions at Apple?
I think there is a large group at Apple that has the idea that they are trying to protect users from themselves.

I wish that they would do it by using something like Parental Controls and allow "adults" to turn it off and control things like we used to.

One other thing that I dislike about the new Disk Utility is that they changed First Aid so that the only option is "Repair", I always liked to run the "Verify" pass first to see what it though it was going to try to repair, and maybe decide to use Disk Warrior for the actual repair instead of having First Aid mangle it more.

A couple of tips from reading the instructions to patch an old version of Disk Utility:
- apparently patch works in El Capitan (10.11), but not in Sierra (10.12).
[Onamuji - please correct me if wrong on this, but that's what the comments say on the link you gave.]

- One comment says that the Mavericks (10.9) version of Disk Utility doesn't work for the patch. So you need the Yosemite (10.10) version.

- the author suggests getting an old version of Disk Utility using Time Machine. The commenter said he'd done a reinstall of Yosemite to get that version of Disk Utility. If you have a Yosemite installer file you can use Pacifist to extract Disk Utility from the installer, without having to do a reinstall of Yosemite.
http://www.charlessoft.com

To use Pacifist on the Yosemite Installer to get Disk Utility:
1. Open Pacifist, and choose the option "Open Apple Installers", then choose Yosemite.
2. Once the package loads, enter “Disk Utility.app” (without quotes) in the search field at the top right.
3. Select the 4 “Disk Utility.app” files that appear in the pop-out Search Results on the right.
4. Choose "Extract To..." from the task bar. You will need to create a folder if you want to extract it to the Desktop.
5. After extracting Disk Utility.app, move it from the folder you created in #4 to the Desktop.
You should now be able to follow the instructions on Onamuji's link.

This is what I did, and it worked.

Another comment on Onamuji's link, by dimosgmx, offers an alternative method for patchiing and offers some utilities:

Extract Disk Utility from either Yosemite or El Capitan installer package:

Automatically patch Disk Utility from Yosemite to run on El Capitan:

. . . and says something about running both Disk Utility 13 (from Yosemite) and Disk Utlity 15 (from El Capitan) which I don’t quite follow:

If you replace the DiscRecordingUI.framework on an El Capitan usb installer or recovery partition with the one from Yosemite, you can have Disk Utility 13 as well as the new Disk Utility or just replace it. To have both you need to modify two files: InstallerMenuAdditions.plist and Utilities.plist

Apparently this refers to another utility which can add the patched version of Disk Utility 13 to a USB installer drive for El Capitan:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/files/f...tilityzip/
This app will "inject" the Disk Utility included in OS X Yosemite inside an OS X USB Installer. This will allow you to access both the new and old disk utility from the Utilities menu.
Don't know what is meant by "Utilities menu". Utilities folder?

It sounds like this utility both patches the Yosemite version and adds it to the El Capitan installer, but I'm not completely clear about that. Sounds like when you run the El Capitan installer, it will install BOTH Disk Utility 15 and the patched version of Disk Utility 13, and

Can Disk Utility can be renamed without causing problems?
I know some applications do not work properly if you rename them. Could I name it “Disk Utility v13” or “Disk Utility-Yosemite” and put it in the Utilities folder with the OS 10.11 version?

You're right. I completely forgot that Sierra broke it again.

When I launch it under Sierra, I'm doing it from a script that opens the binary from the application bundle. Don't remember whether I hacked it myself or downloaded a patch, but I just tried the patched-for-Sierra version that comes up in a Google search and it's not quite the same as what I've been using.

Completely blanked on doing any sort of update for Sierra. Sorry.
