Election year? Then it must be time to pander!

Iowa lawmakers early Wednesday passed a bill that would outlaw most abortions after six weeks, a measure aimed at returning the legal fight over abortion to the Supreme Court.

Yeah, well, it's not really. It's something that you just kinda have to do every election cycle if you're a Republican. It's not like this law hasn't been tossed out. Again and again.

It is similar to measures passed and struck down by the courts in recent years in North Dakota and Arkansas.

The Supremos (as currently constituted, at least) didn't deem North Dakota's or Arkansas' laws even worthy of review when they were tossed out by lower court judges.

State Senator Janet Petersen, a Democrat, called the bill an attack on women’s rights and said she believed Republicans, who control the Iowa governorship and both legislative chambers, might have acted in part for political reasons — fear of losing power in November’s elections.

Gee, d'ya think? The only thing that Republicans hate worse than the thought of abortion is the thought that they might succeed by accident some day, and then where will they go for their votes? (and to solve their mistresses' little problems?)

Iowa guv signs bill.

Start the clock (and tally the legal costs carried by taxpayers) until the law she signed gets tossed by a judge.
