It was a strategic plan. If Warren whipped out her bow during the interview, there was a good chance that the arrow would pass through without hitting him.

LB J wasn't elected President going through the normal primary process. That's not to say he wouldn't have been able to do it on his own.

Also note that Nixon beat Humphrey by making possibly treasonous deals with foreign nationals. That's twice Republicans have done something like this in my lifetime.

Yeah, but you didn't see it coming which means anything can happen. So you can't ever really count anybody out or in.
