PBS NewsHour Series: China: Power & Prosperity
#1
This aired starting last month. If you haven't watched it or missed it I would highly recommend it.

"Come along with PBS NewsHour as we explore today’s China and its relationship with the United States. With more than 70 interviews in eight Chinese cities and across seven countries — plus exclusive digital coverage — we’ll explore the hidden social, economic and political forces at play in the emerging superpower."

China has been a superpower in every century for the last 2000+ years - except the 20th. They will be a true SP the second half of the 21st.

The 19th wasn't great for them either...

Early, was terrific. In 1820, China was the world's largest economy. Dropped, then took over first place in 2014 again.

Exactly, it started strong, but the "Century of Humiliation" was nigh....

I remember reading somewhere that though most of human history, "China" or whoever was in charge in China, was the richest nation on earth, due in large part by geography:
1.It was mostly a flat plain in what used to be called "China Proper" and pretty fertile, supporting a very large population NOT isolated by mountains and seas, like Europe.
2.Unlike India, China was not blocked by mountains, but had a less inaccessible eastern border of desert, so trade was done via the Silk Road to Europe and via short sea trips to the Western Pacific Islands.

This is by no means complete, but a top two for China's wealth. They called themselves "the Central Kingdom" for a reason...
