I've reduced a several hundred mb PDF down to several hundred kb using Acrobat's built in "Reduce File Size" feature. On the other hand, I've had it reduce a 6.8mb file to 6.8mb. It really depends on what comprises the PDF.

Lotsa layers? Might want to flatten it first.
jdc's right, bfd's never seen a pdf of almost gigabyte status… it's a little more than 45MB per page. Bet your pics are hi-res - in the 300dpi range… kind of hard to correct that at this stage, but you could go into PS and resize the images to 100 dpi or so. Do you need this catalog to work for some kind of art printing?

Acrobat 8.0 has a nice 'optimization' feature that helps quite a bit.

Automator has a workflow piece that allows you to choose the compression level of your pdf. Automator is just so cool!
