Installing 10.15 Catalina on RAID 0 array
#1
Can anyone confirm if this will work?

Clone the 2 drive RAID 0 array in a 2012 Mac Mini 10.11.6

Upgrade the external clone to 10.15 Catalina

Clone it back to the internal RAID 0 array

Done

Or not

no, it will NOT work

booting from a RAID was last supported with 10.12. It's been said that copying a 10.13 drive to a RAID would work, but you can't run updates and I seem to remember all sorts of problems - I certainly wouldn't trust it. That's when I left RAID booting. I haven't heard of anyone duping 10.14 or 10.15, but I would suggest that it would be a BIG waste of time.

Single SSD is faster.

No. Don't even try it.

You might be able to use the DosDude tool or Carbon Copy Cloner to deal with the low-level stuff of making bootable Catalina volumes on a RAID, but...

1. You shouldn't be booting from a striped RAID. It's very VERY risky.
2. It's an unsupported configuration that can be hosed by a system update or crash.
3. You have better options. Like NOT using a striped RAID for your boot vol and instead using a SSD.

Thank all. Looks like the upgrade path is going to include a 2TB SSD and a docking station to clone the RAID 0 array. Then disassembly of the Mini to replace the drives.

Not free and a lot more work. Oh well.

Thanks all
