It's not a "counterpart," but you might be thinking of /Applications/Preview.app ?

But Preview will display PDF's too..

FWIW, acrobat reader 8 seems waaaaay faster than previous versions of reader for the mac

Wow. That blunder matches their logo blunder nicely. Don't they know that tons of people haven't a clue their products aren't all named Adobe?
