Smart Plug wiring question
#1
Anybody know if a Smart Plug (non-dimming) will function without the
ground plug connection?
(Would control a 12vdc/1A wall wart that's ungrounded.)

Try using a 2 prong to 3 prong adapter.

It all depends on the internal wiring. Which varies wildly. You can test it.

Or replace the outlet with a GFCI 'hack'.

My rule is that if it has the ground plug you use it.

It's there for a reason. Manufacturers don't spend money on doing it right without an economic justification.

Most of these have a loop that screws to the ground.

Maybe so, but don't fool yourself, an outlet with only 2 prongs probably doesn't have a ground at all. If shielded wiring was used then you may have a path, but it not then there is no point.
