Kudos to Powerextra (rechargeable batteries/chargers) for customer service
#1
Powerextra is a brand all over Amazon for batteries and chargers. http://www.powerextra.com

Last year I bought a kit that includes a dual-battery charger and two batteries for an old Canon camera. I think I charged up the new batteries with it once, or attempted to, and wound up not touching the camera for most of the year. I never used the batteries.

I don't know if I ever successfully got the batteries charged; the display changed from "charging" activity to dead and I forgot about it all.

Fast forward to now and I'm sure the batteries are junk but the charger works. I have two Canon chargers, neither of which can do anything with the batteries from Powerextra. Light blinks a few times and then nothing. The batteries, when inserted into the Powerextra charger, don't even show up as inserted at all.

Meanwhile, the Powerextra charger happily charges an older Canon battery and another 3rd party one.

*************

Given that this was the first opportunity I had had to reach any conclusions I shared them on Amazon as a review, not looking for action but fairly wanted to share what I knew.

Powerextra contacted me, asking for any details and apologizing. They offered either a replacement or a refund. I chose the latter, since I had since then picked up working batteries elsewhere. It was beyond the refund period; they didn't have to do that.

Cool. I'm actually looking for sime EN-EL replacement batteries for my Nikon; I'll take that into consideration.

Just remember, I didn’t say they were any good.

3rd party batteries remain a roulette wheel of success. In addition to the older canon BP-511a set I was pursuing (old digital tape camcorders, early DSLRs up to my 50D , the 5D etc) I also picked up some stuff for the 6D I just got, which uses the newer LP-E6n style. I bought a Wasabi charger for that one, and two used-but-good Canon batteries off eBay.

There remains a gap between the $50-$80-ish OEMs and the $10 trash on Amazon.

I bought a Powerextra LP-E4 battery (also for Canon cameras but a different model). Charged it correctly initially using a Canon charger and used it a couple times. Before long it wouldn't charge. So (td) to Powerextra in my case.
